Thank you! This really worked. I always wondered what made some discs finalize and others not. Now I can go through all the old ones and finalize and upload them. I have some irreplaceable stuff so better to get them up asap. tHANK YOU!

Man,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!..
You just saved me from making tedious phone calls. I read the manual and there is NO sign of this issue in the entire manual!.. I was going to call Canon but just wanted to give it a shot here. This thread was the first to pop...
I immediately tried: With the battery (showing plenty in the battery bar), the "Finalize" option was black (not available) as soon as I hooked up the power cord, it turned white (available).

I will share this finding with other Canon owners...:))))

It's been long time since I've dealt with this camera, but I believe you just need to copy the video file to your computer and edit it using the video editing software of your choice. The individual videos are contained in that one long AVI file.

If you don't have any video editing software, try the free Windows Movie Maker that should already be on your Windows computer. If not, go here:

For windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=D6BA5972-328E-4DF7-8F9D-068FC0F80CFC&displaylang=en

Windows 7: http://download.live.com/moviemaker

Well, I hope your Christmas/friend's marriage wasn't teetering on the success of the video, but I know the feeling! I'm glad you found the answer you were looking for!
