I'm not sure if there's a time limit, but after trying to reset it a couple times, I found that holding the button until the prompt appeared was the only way to know you've held it long enough. I was holding both the power button and the reset buttons, and didn't realize that it was simply a matter of holding the power button, then press and release the reset button while holding the Power button a while longer. It didn't automatically pop up with the prompt for me to delete, though, I held it for probably 20 seconds, then figured I'd done something wrong so I let go of the power button at which point I got the prompt.
